Beverly Elkins FERRUM — Beverly Loving Elkins, 26, of Ferrum died Saturday, March 24, 2007. She was a 1998 graduate of Salem High School and was a Pharmacy Technician. She was an ardent animal lover and was a member of the Great Dane and Greyhound Rescue organizations. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Bill Jennings; grandmother Margie Loving and a cousin, Jessee Ashby. She is survived by her husband, Todd M. Elkins; mother, Jeannie Brown; father Ronald Loving; step-father Robert Brown; sister Shanel Dorton; nephew Joshua Taylor; grandmother, Evelyn Jennings; mother-in-law and father-in-law Judy and Earl Elkins; best friend and cousin, Elsie Monsour; her Great Dane Brenny; several aunts, uncles, cousins other extended family members and many friends. The funeral service will be held at Oakey’s South Chapel Thursday, March 29, 2007 at 10 a.m. with Pastor Mike Lauridsen officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. Joe Humphries Walter Garland “Joe” Humphries, 73, of 3810 Upper Rich Patch Road, died, Sunday, March 25, 2007 at the University of Virginia Medical Center at Charlottesville. He was born June 26, 1933 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Samuel “Abe” and Bertha Tucker Humphries. Mr. Humphries retired from Acadia, Inc. as a material handler after 34 years of service. He was a life long farmer and cattleman in the Rich Patch area. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Surviving are his wife Nadine Craft Humphries of Covington; a son Garland Humphries and his wife Jo Anne of Buchanan ; two grandsons, Aaron Humphries and Ethan Humphries, both of Buchanan ; two brothers, Wallace Humphries and Wade Humphries, both of Covington; two sisters, Mary Persinger and Maggie Humphries, both of Covington and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Arritt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Fisher officiating. The interment will be made in the Smith Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Judd Smith, Jeffrey Smith, Chris Persinger, Dale Jackson, Woody Smith, David Ross, Leslie “Dubbie” Humphries and Lance Craft. Va. — Miss Peggy Ellawise Boswell, age 80, of White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., died today at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Fairlea, W. Va. Miss Boswell was born August 28, 1926 in Cass, W. Va., the daughter of the late Roderick A. Boswell and Hettie McDermott Boswell. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and are being handled by Loving Funeral Home. Mary Johnson Mrs. Mary Alice May Johnson, age 79, of Valley Ridge, died Saturday, March 24, 2007, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Clarence Ivan Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was born September 7, 1927 in Alleghany County, the daughter of the late Moses M. May and Mary Pearl Byer May Newcomer. A lifetime member of this community, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Johnson loved working in the yard and was an avid reader. She enjoyed collecting Longaberger baskets. In addition to her parents, Moses M. May and Mary Pearl Byer May Newcomer and her husband, Clarence Ivan Johnson, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred May Bartley on February 15, 2005 Mrs. Johnson is survived by two daughters, Mary Melissa J. “Missy” Hendrick and husband, Lynn of Roanoke and Sheilah J. “Shelly” Michie of Selma; three grandchildren, Shawn M. Michie, Brandon L. Hendrick and Ashley B. Michie; one great-grandson, Nathanial J. “Nate” Michie; and one sister, Laura M. Guth and husband, James of Covington. .A private service was held today with the Rev. Thurmond G. Ayers officiating. Interment followed in Alleghany Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Lynn C. Hendrick, Shawn M. Michie, Brandon L. Hendrick, James E. Guth, Johnathan K. Simpson, Randolph W. Downey and Michael P. Michie. Vernon Spinks SELMA — Vernon Clifford Spinks, age 64, of 1405 Donovan Street, Selma, died Monday, March 26, 2007 at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington, Virginia after a courageous battle with heart disease. Born September 6, 1942 in Maxwelton, W. Va., he was a son of the late Billy Clifford Spinks and Gladys Dotson Spinks. He was a retired maintenance supervisor from The Homestead and also worked in cable TV maintenance. He was a member and past worshipful master of the Clifton Forge Masonic Lodge No. 166 A.F. & A.M., a member of the Alleghany Royal Arch Chapter No. 24, the Alleghany Commandery No. 23, the Knights Templar of Virginia, the Kazim Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Roanoke, and the Clifton Forge Shrine Club. He was a member of Selma Church of the Brethren as well as member and past president of the Selma Volunteer Fire Department. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Gracie Spinks. He is survived by his wife, Linda Broughman Spinks of Selma, a daughter, Holly Spinks of Selma, two sons; Christopher Spinks and wife Katie of Covington and Steven Spinks and wife Missy of Buchanan, two sisters; Geraldine Ingram and husband Avis of St. Augustine, Fla. and Anna Mae Paxton and husband Bruce of Covington, a brother Ralph Spinks and wife Margaret of Forrest Hills, Ky.; eight grandchildren; Victoria Spinks, Kinley Spinks, Erica Spinks, Miranda Smithers, Ben Spinks, Haden Spinks, Veronica Helvey, and Gavin Spinks; an uncle, Roy Spinks of Greenbrier County, W. Va., and a number of nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Darlene Downer of St. Augustine, Fla. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with the Reverend Ed West officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Clifton Forge. Pallbearers will be members of the Selma Volunteer Fire Department.
