6/22/2010 2:27:00 PM Master Gardeners To Be At Farmers Market
Alleghany Highlands Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand at the Covington Farmers Market Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. to answer horticultural and gardening questions, and to offer pressure canner lid testing.
Participants should bring samples or photos of problem plants, trees or insects; place plants or insects in a zipper-type plastic bag.
If the insects are alive, place in a sealed jar with air holes punched on the lid; photos should be taken at close range.
A coin or ruler placed beside the plant will aid in visual perspective; testing of pressure canner lids is limited to dial gauges only.
Weights cannot be tested; bring the pressure canner lid, gauge and gasket. There is no need to bring the entire canner.
If you don't have a chance to visit the Master Gardener booth at the market, volunteers are available at the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office in Low Moor on Mondays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Call the office at 862-0369 to speak directly with one of the local volunteers.
Master Gardner volunteers encourage residents to support the Farmers Market in downtown Covington and Clifton Forge.
